How I work

Most of what I offer is a thinking partnership — a place to stress-test a decision, reframe a situation, or simply hear yourself think out loud with someone who has seen similar situations play out before.

Having sat on many different sides of the table , as counsel inside hundreds of board rooms, as an investor evaluating which companies to fund, and now as a coach, I've observed an unusually large "n" of companies navigate the same problems in different ways. That breadth is the point. I understand the "why" behind most standard practices well enough to reason from first principles about what applies in your specific situation, rather than telling you what worked somewhere else.

Coaching affords me the luxury of being clearly and unambiguously on your side, not as a cheerleader, but as a straight shooter who knows the game and wants you to succeed. Other actors in a founder's or investor's world have competing responsibilities and priorities. My only role is to help you accomplish your objectives.

I'm willing to go further than a typical coaching engagement when it's useful. I've helped close candidates, facilitated difficult conversations, and made myself available the way a trusted senior advisor would — not just a scheduled hour every two weeks.

What I work on

Most of what I do is help you think clearly under pressure — high stakes, incomplete information, and no obvious person to call. This is especially true in the current AI moment, where the conventional playbook is genuinely unreliable. The value isn't knowing which rules to follow — it's understanding why those rules existed so you can reason clearly about what still applies.

For founders and CEOs
Board and investor dynamics. Navigating the relationship between you and your capital, maintaining trust while protecting your company's direction.

Operating. Translating broad vision into a small set of clear priorities. This includes the personnel decisions that keep you up at night, hiring senior leaders who know more than you about their function, and knowing when and how to part ways with someone who isn't working out.

The conversations you can't have. A space to examine the fears and options that can't be surfaced with the team, the board, or your investors.
For venture investors
The principal-to-partner shift. Moving from rigorous analysis to confident conviction, a transition that requires a fundamentally different relationship with uncertainty.

Board effectiveness. Helping you to practice targeted, selective engagement, contributing focused perspective where it matters most.

Firm building. Managing the internal dynamics of a partnership: the culture, trust, and alignment that determine whether your firm compounds over time.

My background

The legal foundation
I was among the most recognized startup lawyers in Silicon Valley, spending more than 10,000 hours inside board rooms as primary counsel to Facebook, Twitter, Square, Figma, and Samsara. I authored the Series Seed Documents, now the industry standard for early-stage financing.
The investor lens
I am a current board partner and former investment partner at Cowboy Ventures, with investments including Drata, Vic.ai, and Arcol. I understand how investors think, what they respond to, and how the game is actually played, from many different sides of the table.
The coaching practice
Since 2023, I have worked privately with founders and executives navigating scale, including Healthleap.ai, Reevo.ai, and Office Hours, and served on public company boards, including as Compensation Committee Chair at Satellogic (NASDAQ: SATL).

Who this is for

I call my practice Stoked Advisors because I will bring positive energy into our time together. Because life is short, I prefer to work with people who have a genuine passion for their work and a real desire to learn. If you're being pushed into coaching by your investors, I'm not the right fit.

I work with a very small number of clients. My coaching is referral only, which means that I require an introduction from someone who knows you.

As part of my service to the community, I offer free coaching to nonprofit leaders. I've served on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations and help leaders align mission-driven teams around performance and measurement — without losing the why. No referral is required.
